Thrive at Home: September
September Feature: Protecting Focus in a Distracted World
September Focus: Attention is a learning superpower.
How can families help children develop the focus needed for deep learning?
At Allegiance STEAM Academy (ASA), students are asked to think critically, solve complex problems, collaborate with peers, and engage in meaningful, real-world learning experiences daily. These high-level skills require sustained, deep attention.
By partnering with us to create distraction-free environments at home, families help students maximize their learning potential, protect their cognitive energy, and develop lifelong habits that support college, career, and future readiness.
🧠The "Brain Drain" Reality
Did you know that a smartphone doesn't even need to be turned on or active to hurt your child's concentration?
Scientific research suggests that simply having a smartphone nearby—even if it is silent, turned off, or face down on the desk—instantly lowers available cognitive capacity. Because the brain must expend active, subconscious energy to not check the device, it leaves fewer mental resources available for memory recall, complex problem-solving, and deep learning.
Why Focus Matters
Every day, students are asked to absorb new information, solve problems, collaborate with classmates, and apply their learning in meaningful ways.
All of these tasks require one critical skill: Attention.
Research shows that even when a phone is turned off, its presence can reduce available cognitive capacity. When devices compete for our attention, our brains must work harder to stay focused, leaving fewer mental resources available for learning.
The good news is that small changes can make a big difference.
This month, we invite families to help students create environments that support focus and learning.

3 Thrive Hacks for Better Focus
📌 Hack 1: Create a Device Parking Lot
- Actionable Steps:
- Choose a Central Station: Pick a designated charging tray or basket outside the learning space (e.g., in the hallway or kitchen).
- Establish Homework Hours: Define a clear window where all devices (phones, tablets, gaming consoles) must remain "parked."
- Adults Model the Behavior: Park your own devices during this time to demonstrate focused family connection.
📌 Hack 2: Design a Focus Zone
- Focus-Friendly Essentials:
- Good Lighting: Ensure the workspace is bright and easy on the eyes.
- Minimal Clutter: Keep only current, active materials on the desk surface.
- Necessary Supplies Nearby: Keep pencils, paper, and calculators within arm's reach to prevent frequent wandering.
- Reduced Distractions: Position the desk away from high-traffic family areas or active television screens.
📌 Hack 3: Practice Deep Work
- The Focus Cycle Strategy:
- Focused Work Block: Have your student set a timer and work with 100% focus for 20 minutes.
- Short Brain Break: Follow up with a 5-minute break to stretch, grab water, or move around.
- Repeat: Reset the timer and build momentum. These structured intervals reduce frustration and build mental stamina!
